How do we move forward in this dumpster fire of a year?
I’ve put off posting a blog for the last few weeks. All of the topics seemed so trivial compared to the events going on in this country currently. The racial injustices further highlighted by the complete disregard of Breonna Taylor’s life. Yet another time that the US government told us that Black lives do not matter to them. It is heartbreaking to see this continue on as it has for centuries. It just seems that there is no end in sight. I feel for the next generation as they are seeing a world in which they do not matter.
California is on fire. Ruth Bader Ginsburg died and will likely be replaced by someone who will further fight to ensure inequality for women and people of color. The pandemic continues to destroy communities, and hits communities of color much harder. So, where do we go from here? How do you practice self-care and find joy in a world that is literally on fire.
In these circumstances, we are reminded of the idea of putting the oxygen mask on first before helping a child put theirs on. If we hope to make a difference in the world in a bigger way, we must take care of ourselves. In these times, it can be hard to muster the energy to do this. Know that you are not alone. The lack of motivation and feelings of despair are widespread. Find your support system. Lean into them. Now more than ever. Let others support you as you care for yourself, therefore preparing yourself to care for others. And don’t forget, self-care is not selfish. It does not have to be elaborate. It can be something small. It doesn’t have to take a ton of time. Get help if you need it. Reach out to friends or family. Find a therapist. Talk to yourself as you would a friend. Allow yourself to relax. Turn off the news. Take a social media break. Rest. Eat well. Nourish your body. Take a walk. Sleep in. Do things that bring you joy even in these times.
